Mobile business, Radio, and NiteClub.
In all of the years that I have been a DJ, I have also had the good fortune of being more than just a mobile DJ. There are three types of DJ's: mobile, radio, and niteclub. Each has something different to offer. One type isn't necessarily better than the other, just different. In choosing a DJ, knowing their background makes it a little easier. Here is what you need to know about the three different DJ types and how they can help you.
Mobile DJ
A mobile DJ provides DJ services in any given location. Usually, they tend to cater to weddings, private parties, etc. The best qualities that mobile DJ's have is that they know a little about everything. They are good with announcements and the formalities of specific events, but they also know music, equipment and how to keep a professional atmosphere. A good DJ of this type should know how to "read a crowd" and make sure that the guests are content with the entertainment. The mobile DJ is the best choice for private services. Keep in mind that that not ALL mobile DJ's have ALL of these qualities, but these are the ones you should look for when choosing a mobile DJ.
Radio DJ
In comparison to mobile DJ's, Radio DJ's have a different set of qualities. They are usually in a closed environment and don't usually have to interact with the audience. Their music selection, and knowledge about it, is usually limited to a specific genre or style. They usually tend to play off of pre-determined playlists designated by the radio station's format. However, these aren't necessarily "bad" qualities. These are the characteristics that make a great radio personality. They have to be specifically adapted to their environment in order to be credible. For instance, in order to be a credible "Hip Hop" radio DJ, you have to know that particular style very well. Additional qualities include: excellent announcement skills, great timing, and professionalism. In addition, radio DJ's get the best advertising just by being on the radio every day.
Club DJ
Club DJs have a wide range of skill in the creative department. They usually have to put on a good show for an entire night without missing a beat. This form of DJ experiences some of the harshest conditions of the job in regards to the audience. A good Club DJ is able to remix music live, keep it in beat, and transition the music so that it all blends together. Although most Club DJs stick to a specific genre, they usually know the music better than anyone. They have to in order to remix and transition, similar to being like a musician. This type of DJ doesn't necessarily have good public speaking skills, but their work in the music area can be unparalleled.
